Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology

Facilitated by experienced educators, the Culture CaraVan offers students interdisciplinary learning opportunities with objects from around the globe. All programs align with Common Core and other standards and can be complemented with complimentary curricular materials or a museum visit.

Check the Culture CaraVan’s availability and to submit your request online at least three weeks in advance of your desired program date. Any date marked “busy” on the calendar is unavailable.

Culture CaraVan Standards

Recommended for Grades 4-8
Dig into the science of archaeology. Students will practice the process of scientific inquiry by analyzing artifacts and learning how to locate, map, and excavate archaeological sites.

Recommended for Grades 1-8
Travel the world without leaving the classroom. In “Culture Connect,” students will become global citizens by experiencing and celebrating cultural similarities and differences.

Unpack the past, present, and future of African Americans in Rhode Island. By embracing the West African concept of sankofa, students will investigate legacies of the transatlantic slave trade.

Toltecs and Olmecs and Aztecs, oh Maya! In this program, students will step into the highlands and lowlands of Central America to explore the lifeways of ancient and contemporary Maya peoples.

What cheer, Netop! With a focus on the Narragansett and Wampanoag, students will learn about the cultural heritage of past and present Native New England peoples.

Trek north to meet the Yup’ik and Inupiaq people in Alaska. Students will bundle up, play traditional hunting games, and investigate how climate change impacts life in the Arctic.

Gallop across the plains with the Kiowa, Comanche, and Lakota. Students will understand the legacies of the reservation system, tracing the history of plains tribes from buffalo jumps to contemporary powwows.

Unearth how Hopi people cultivate crops and community in the desert. Students will visit pueblos, decipher petroglyphs, and learn about cultural traditions still observed today.
