Michèle M. Hayeur Smith, Research Associate, is a specialist on cultural and social aspects of northern cultures. Her research interests are in material culture, dress, the body, and gender. She is currently working on a research project on gender and the production and circulation of textiles from the Viking Age to the early 19th century. This project, (Rags to Riches: an Archaeological Study of Gender and Textiles in Iceland AD 875-AD1800, NSF no. 102316) is examining curated archaeological textiles collections from roughly 26 Icelandic sites and is offering new insights into gender, textile production and trade in and out of Iceland, weaving technologies through time, as well as dress practices throughout the medieval period.
